Have a Healthy & Happy Halloween!

Has too much Halloween candy got you spooked? For anyone trying to lose weight, the scariest part of Halloween is not ghosts and goblins, but the sugar and empty calories of Halloween candy. Those little fun-size candy bars may seem harmless, but all it takes is an additional 100 calories a day (or the equivalent of a fun-sized candy bar) for weight gain to creep up. Stay on track with your health goals this “spooky season” by trying these 5 tricks to avoid those Halloween treats!

  1. Buy candy you don’t love. It is much easier to resist temptation when your candy bowl is full of treats that aren’t your favorites.

  2. Out of sight, out of mind. If your workplace has candy bowls left and right, ask to keep the candy hidden in a cabinet in

the break room, or in a colored container with a lid so you can’t see inside.

  3. Be that house. You don’t have to pass out candy on Halloween. Start a new tradition and hand out non-edible items (I

am not talking about toothbrushes or pencils unless you want your house egged)…lol. Try handing out glow sticks,

temporary tattoos, bouncy balls, slime putty, and other fun stuff!

  4. When the rush of trick-or-treaters begins to wind down, leave your excess candy in a bowl on the front porch. You know someone is going to take it! Or you can donate extra candy to your local food pantry, children’s hospital, or troops overseas.

  5. So if you are still craving something sweet? Cut up little bites of chocolate protein bars and wrap them in tinfoil like little Hershey “Kisses”. When our brain sees those little silver triangles of delight, it releases a dopamine rush, similar to the one you get when eating chocolate (but without all the sugar)! Happy Halloween!!

Have no fear, and let’s conquer this Halloween season together, one healthy choice at a time! You got this!
